Causes of Sleep Apnea

There are three types of sleep apnea — obstructive, central, and mixed.

Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is the most common and the easiest to treat. It is caused by a blockage of the airway when the soft tissue of the throat temporarily closes during sleep. When this happens, the diaphragm, lungs, and abdomen will react strongly for want of oxygen, but this can result in further obstruction of the airway. The blockage is undone when the sleeping individual turns over or temporarily awakens.

Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain fails to send a signal to the muscles responsible for breathing during sleep. Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
Loud snoring
Persistent Drowsiness
Restless Sleep
Waking Up Out of Breath
Morning Headaches
Dry Mouth Upon Waking

Please note that not all of these symptoms have to be present in every case of sleep apnea. Dr. John T. Bowman, DMD, MD will assess your symptoms to rule out or diagnose sleep apnea.

Why Treating Sleep Apnea is Important

Sleep apnea can be caused by a variety of issues, including genetic factors, stress, and obesity. If left untreated, sleep apnea can quickly affect your quality of life, leading to long-lasting health problems, including:

High blood pressure
Cardiovascular disease
Weight gain
Chronic headaches
Memory loss

Because the effects of sleep apnea are very serious, it’s important to start on a treatment plan as soon as possible.

Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea

Our Boca Raton practice provides custom treatment options for sleep apnea based on your unique situation. Dr. Bowman offers the following treatment options:

Custom-designed sleep apnea appliances - Oral appliances are FDA-approved for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. They are worn during sleep and keep the jaw in place, preventing soft tissue collapse. They are comfortable, portable, and easy to use.

Surgical care - In serious cases, or where central sleep apnea is indicated, Dr. Bowman may refer patients to a specialist for surgical treatment. If a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) device may serve a patient better, he will work with your dentist or medical practitioner to have one matched to you.
